Overview

Providing people with dyslexia an online platform to support with reading and writing.

Problem

In Ireland, up to 10% of students within education have dyslexia. Dyslexia affects everyone differently, however it mainly impacts reading and writing and if not supported, dyslexia can make school and work a stressful experience. Graham is a person with dyslexia and he noticed when we went back to education as a mature student, that the technology offered to him at the time was the same technology that he used 10 years previously. Not only had that technology not developed, it didn’t meet his needs, or the needs of the other students.

Solution

In 2020, Graham developed Peer. It is an online solution that can be accessed at peer.ie which supports people with their reading, writing and spelling. Peer is unique in that it uses both text to speech and speech to text catering for people’s needs when both writing and reading documents.

Impact

So far, Graham has started pilots of the solution with two universities, one in Dublin and one in London. They have engaged 200+ students on the platform who are using Peer to support them with the college work and assignments.
